Ballasts are needed to operate Discharge Lamp such as Fluorescent Lamps, Compact Fluorescent Lamps, High-pressure Mercury Lamps, Metal Halide Lamps, and High-pressure Sodium Lamps. They serve to stabilise gas discharge by limiting the current during operation and they deliver the necessary striking voltage for starting where necessary.
